David J. Srolovitz received his B.S. in Physics from Rutgers University in 1978 and his Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1981.  After a post-doctoral appointment at Exxon Research, he became a staff member in the Theory and Materials Science and Technology Divisions at Los Alamos National Laboratory.  He then returned to academics and has since held senior faculty appointments at the University of Michigan (1987-1989), Princeton University (1999-2006), Yeshiva University (2006-2009, also as Dean), the University of Pennsylvania (2012-present), and several distinguished visiting professorships.  From 2009-2012, Dr. Srolovitz was Executive Director of the A*STAR Institute for High Performance Computing in Singapore. 

He is a Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS), The Minerals, Metals, & Materials Society (TMS), the Institute of Physics London, and ASM International, as well as a member of the National Academy of Engineering.  His 2013 MRS Materials Theory Award press release states: “For 30 years he has been at the forefront of theoretical and computational materials science, making contributions to a variety of important materials theory problems” and cites his “decisive and highly influential contributions to the theory and simulation of microstructure, morphological evolution, mechanical behavior, and the structure and dynamics of interfaces.”
  
Research Interests

Computational and Theoretical Materials Science | Defects; Growth; Evolution; and Deformation of materials
Dave conducts research in defects in materials, growth of materials, evolution of the microstructure and morphology of materials, and the mechanical deformation of materials. He does this through the development and application of analytical theory and a wide range of computational modeling techniques, ranging from the quantum mechanical to atomistic to microstructural to continuum.
